One of the great joys of my life is to watch a student bloom and unearth a piece of themselves through our musical exploration. I strive to cultivate a love of learning in my students, especially in order to sustain them through the long, often arduous journey of learning to play a stringed instrument. What a gift it is, especially in today's increasingly automated and digital age, to work with our hands, minds, and soul in our studies of the cello.  

 

My teaching philosophy centers on passing along the knowledge I've gained from my lifelong musical studies in service of creating a strong technical foundation, rooted in Western Classical tradition, to facilitate musical and artistic freedom (and, of course, joyful expression!) with the cello. My own teachers include Richard Aaron, Rajan Krishnaswami, Rick Mooney, and Nancy Yamagata. I also incorporate improvisation skills and mindfulness practices into my lessons, as I find these are essential tools for developing creativity and mental wellbeing in any student.
